RHADC RS-21 Inter Club Regatta

By John Nicholls

The Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club hosted an Inter-club Regatta in the RS21s on four consecutive Sundays between January 22nd and February 12th.The regatta was designed to build camaraderie between the local sailing clubs as well as to further expose the RS21 to Bermuda sailors. Participating clubs were St. Georges Dinghy and Sports Club, The East End Mini Yacht Club, The RBYC, Sandys Boat club, and The RHADC (with two teams). It was a friendly regatta with some clubs using the opportunity to put their fitted dinghy teams through their paces and training up new crew. The format was short course racing in the Hamilton Harbor: right in front of the Club. Between 5 and 6 races were held each morning, with the teams arriving at 9AM and back at the club by 1 PM for lunch and “Banter”.

All the teams enjoyed quick close racing in shifty and sometimes challenging conditions. It was often snakes and ladders as the unpredictable harbor winds challenged the crews. There was always a way back into a race and being in front early was no guarantee of a win. The short course format puts teamwork to the forefront and requires consistent focus. The feedback was hugely positive from all involved and The Sailing Committee is very pleased to launch this new(ish) short course format for the RS21s.

The two RHADC teams came out on Top with StGDSC close in third.
